Transport research planned
A clutch of communities have a rare chance to be part of some exciting research.
The combined universities research team wants tenants’ views on shared vehicles.
Ōtautahi Community Housing tenants living in and near the new Brougham Street development are invited to be part of a project run by Canterbury, Lincoln, and Otago universities.
The universities are partnering with ŌCHT to explore how the new electric vehicle and e-bike trial starting at Brougham Street this month changes how residents get around.
Lincoln University researcher Helen Fitt says the project has some far-reaching aims.
“The ultimate goal of the research is to help New Zealand design better homes for happy and healthy New Zealanders,” she says.
“But in the shorter term we want to work out how to make it easier for ŌCHT’s tenants to get around and do the things they need to do and want to do.”

The trial is the first of its kind in the country and could influence the way other communities are designed.
“Understanding whether people are open to making shared vehicles a preferred transport option could be a big help as our communities plan for the future.”
If you live at Hoiho Lane, Karoro Lane, Korimako Lane, Waltham Courts, Tommy Taylor Courts, or Hastings Street East, keep an eye on your mailbox from the week of June 14.
The researchers will deliver some survey forms and a link to an online version of the survey. They’ll also include a free gift.
The researchers were also available for a chat at the first e-vehicle education event held at Karoro Lane on June 12.
Every eligible tenant who completes a survey will get a $15 supermarket gift card as a ‘thank you’ from the research team.
People at other complexes are not eligible to take part in this stage of the research.
Helen says there’s a good chance they will later in the project – so watch this space.
