Award recognises Lane team
It takes a community to build a community and one of ŌCHT’s newest was built by one of the best.
ŌCHT commercial and development manager Ed Leeson says the New Zealand Commercial Project Award recognises the efforts of the team behind the Tiwaiwaka Lane development.
The team behind Tiwaiwaka Lane is a Silver Award Winner in the Residential Project category of the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards 2021.
Consortium Construction’s entry detailed a 28-home build that had to overcome some significant on-site challenges.
It was built on land previously occupied by community housing but that did not mean the ground offered an easy, blank canvas.
The ground conditions were “difficult”. A contaminated site needed to be cleared before significant building work could begin.
The earth beneath the site was problematic. Three different foundation designs were developed to get the project built without blowing-out costs.
Consortium described its collaboration tools as “old school”, reflecting the close and personable way they and everyone involved work together.
The awards are run by the Registered Master Builders Association, and are different to many similar awards across the industry.
It is the only competition of its kind to recognise the work of the whole project team, rather than simply focusing on the construction itself.
Entrants were told the size of the project wasn’t important; collaboration, innovation and achievement were.

Tiwaiwaka Lane is made up of 28 one and two-bedroom homes.
The homes meet New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) Homestar 6 standards, which means they were designed and built to be warm and efficient, with a reduced environmental impact.
It’s built around a large communal courtyard and features shared gardens.
