Coach’s Column: Benefits of training in 2025

ŌCHT employment coach Lyn says renewing your licences, and getting new licences in line with the industry you want to be part of, demonstrates initiative and competence.

In a changing job market, training can be an effective way to boost employability and stand out from the competition. Investing in training can open doors to new opportunities. Here are some of the key benefits of training when job searching.

1. Skills and knowledge

Employers are constantly on the lookout for candidates with up-to-date skills. Training help bridge gaps in knowledge, ensuring you stay relevant in your chosen field. For example, learning technology, safety standards, renewing your licences, getting new licences in line with the industry you want to be part of, demonstrates initiative and competence.

2. Improved confidence

Training not only enhances your abilities but also boosts your confidence. With newly acquired skills, you'll feel better equipped to tackle interviews, assessments, or on-the-job challenges. Confidence is a trait that employers value highly.

3. Networking opportunities

Many training programs connect you with employers and peers in your industry. This can lead to valuable networking opportunities, and even job leads. A strong network can often help you access positions before they are advertised publicly.

4. Increased marketability and demonstration of initiative

By gaining certifications or completing specialised courses, you make your CV stand out. Employers often prioritise candidates who can show they have done some learning and training because it is a way to show your commitment to finding employment. This can also include finding some volunteering opportunities. Enrolling in training programs demonstrates your willingness to take initiative, a quality that is highly sought after in any workplace.

5. Access to new career paths

Training can open doors to careers you may not have previously considered. It’s a chance to explore options that align with your interests and the availability of jobs.

Final thoughts

The current job market is slowing down and there are more candidates for every job so here are a few tips to keep your job search going and give yourself every chance to get that job.

• Even if you are in training keep job searching you never know when the job for you becomes available

• Look for the hidden job market, talk to the people you know, check your local areas, and ask at places where you would like to work.

• Keep applying for every job that your skills match, you never know, but it’s better to be in to win.

• Find support networks that can help you. Keep in touch with MSD, regularly talk to the work brokers.
