Coach’s Column: Getting help in your journey

Ahead of the next Work Ready Mission meetup this Thursday, ŌCHT employment coach Lyn’s looks at how MSD can help jobseekers.

ŌCHT employment coach Lyn looks forward to seeing tenants at the next Work Ready Mission sessions.

If you read my column last week (and you follow ŌCHT on Facebook) you already know ŌCHT has teamed up with the Christchurch City Mission and Connected MSD for a new series of work readiness meetups designed to help tenants get work ready.

And Our Work Ready Mission sessions really are going great! Last week, we looked at how to highlight our skills and strengths, and how to make the best CV for the jobs we want.

The next session is at the City Mission, 276-284 Hereford Street this Thursday, September 5. MSD will be there to answer any questions you have about the help they can offer.

Accessing Ministry of Social Development (MSD) assistance is often essential for many job seekers in New Zealand.

MSD is a government agency responsible for providing social services and support to individuals, families, and communities across the country.

The Transition to Work Grant can help pay for things you might need to find or start a job such as clothes and travel expenses until your first pay.

But that’s not all MSD offers. Here’s some of the help available via MSD:

  • Jobseeker support: MSD offers several financial assistance options that can help alleviate the stress of unemployment or underemployment. If you qualify, you may receive Jobseeker Support, which provides a financial safety net while you look for work. This assistance can help cover essential living expenses, allowing you to focus on your job search without the constant worry of meeting daily needs.

  • Training and education: MSD offers access to training and education programmes that can enhance your skills and qualifications. Whether you’re looking to upskill in your current field or transition to a new career, MSD can help you find courses and training opportunities that align with your goals. These programmes not only improve your employability but also increase your confidence as you acquire new skills and knowledge.

  • Employment services: Engaging with MSD also means gaining access to a wide network of job opportunities. MSD regularly collaborates with employers and employment services to match job seekers with suitable roles. By staying connected with MSD, you can be among the first to hear about new job openings and be considered for positions that align with your skills and experience.

Here’s a guide on how job seekers can access MSD assistance effectively through MyMSD. Otherwise, come down to the next Work Ready Mission session on Thursday!
