Coach’s Column: Get work ready with a new driving licence
In her latest column, ŌCHT employment coach Lyn looks at how having a specialist driving licence can help your job search
A slower job market provides an ideal opportunity to turbocharge your skills and get work ready.
One way to boost your job prospects when the economy kicks back into gear is to get a Class 2 Driver's Licence.
In a competitive job market, holding a Class 2 driver’s licence can be a game-changer, opening new opportunities and better pay.
A Class 2 licence qualifies you to drive things like trucks and delivery vans, which are crucial across various industries.
This opens up roles in logistics, courier services, waste management, and construction, all sectors with strong demand.
Industry-specific needs like agriculture and infrastructure also create a consistent flow of opportunities for Class 2 drivers.
Jobs that require a Class 2 licence typically pay better than those needing only a standard Class 1 licence.
Companies offer higher wages, overtime pay, and shift work options, which means you can boost your income by working weekends or nights.
A Class 2 licence is also a stepping stone to more advanced driving licences like Class 4 and 5, which allow you to operate heavier vehicles and potentially command even higher salaries.
You can also pursue specialised endorsements like Dangerous Goods or Passenger Transport, making you eligible for niche, high-paying roles.
Many Class 2 roles are in essential services, such as freight and waste management, which are less affected by economic downturns. This offers more job stability compared to other sectors.
Sound like you? Well, here’s how to apply for a Class 2 licence.
Eligibility Criteria
You must be at least 18 years old (or 17 ½ if you're enrolled in an approved training course).
You need to hold a full Class 1 (car) licence for at least six months before applying for Class 2.
You may need a medical certificate from your doctor.
Training
You can take a Class 2 course from an approved provider. Completing the course allows you to skip the practical driving test. Hagley Community College has a great course.
Theory Test
Study the Road Code: The Class 2 theory test is based on the New Zealand Heavy Vehicle Road Code. You can check out what they ask on the NZTA website; you can get tests here.
Take the Theory Test: You can sit the test at your local licensing centre. This test has questions related to driving heavy vehicles and basic road rules.
Pass: After passing, you’ll get a learner's Class 2 licence, allowing you to practice driving a Class 2 vehicle under supervision.
Practical Driving Test
If you didn't complete an approved Class 2 course, you’ll need to practice driving a medium rigid vehicle under supervision.
Schedule your practical test at a licensing centre. During the test, you’ll be assessed on driving skills such as vehicle control, reversing, and handling intersections and roundabouts.
Full Class 2 Licence
After passing the practical test (or completing the approved course), you'll receive your full Class 2 licence. This lets you drive a medium rigid vehicle on your own.
Tips
Study the Heavy Vehicle Road Code to familiarize yourself with Class 2 rules and regulations.
Driver Courses: Enrolling in a training course can fast-track the process and give you hands-on experience with larger vehicles.
